The phrase "highly anticipated" is a cliché in Hollywood, but there's really no other way to describe the latest shipment from Westeros, based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. The 700-page saga traces the history of House Targaryen - or as the TV series further explains, 172 years before the death of the Mad King and the birth of Daenerys Targaryen (played by Emilia Clarke in GOT). The episode begins with the question of succession, who is most deserving of the title and how no woman will ever sit on the Iron Throne.

For a second it felt like we were treated to Dany's ghost in the premiere. After a brief history lesson on House Targaryen, the petite blonde can be seen gallivanting around on her dragon while the disinterested citizens of King's Landing go about their day (fire-breathing creatures seem to be a dime a dozen at the time). When the young woman dismounts the creature with her back to the camera, it looks like the producers dropped a Dana scene from later seasons of GOT. Instead, it's Rhaenyra (the amazing Milly Alcock), the spunky (what else?) daughter of King Viserys Paddy Considine. Waiting for her on solid ground are Ser Harrold Westerling (Outlander's Graham McTavish) - who looks like the HOTD version of GOT's Jorah Mormont - and the charming Alicent (Emily Carey), Rhaenyra's confidant who goes hand-in-hand with her best friend. while helping her study history under the weirwood tree.

Viserys has plenty of love for his only daughter, but his attention is largely focused on his wife (Sian Brooke), who is carrying a son who he hopes will one day inherit his title. It's a difficult pregnancy, which the Queen rationalizes by saying that "it's unpleasant how we serve the realm". Talk about a big sacrifice; because her baby is breech, she undergoes a rudimentary (and very bloody) C-section that ultimately takes her life. And her little son will also die in a kind of cosmic punishment. So much for the male heir.

We also meet another protagonist of the saga - Prince Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith), Viserys' brother's guard commander, who seems to enjoy watching his soldiers castrate and behead criminals in the streets of King's Landing. He's also a Hell Knight and takes part in one of the coolest moments from the premiere. It is also the scariest; The sight of the child throwing up after seeing the player's face crushed is probably the most gripping moment of the episode.

Daemon is the obvious choice to follow his brother to the throne, but he has his detractors, namely Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), the hand of the king, who does not tolerate Daemon's reckless behavior. He causes a scandal by claiming that Daemon named the king's son "heir for a day" at a so-called party at the local funhouse.
